Rug Placement

Area Rug Placement Guide

Living Room

All Furniture on the Rug

For larger rooms, place all furniture legs on the rug to create a cohesive, luxurious look. Leave 12–18 inches of flooring visible around the edges of the room.

Front Legs on the Rug

A versatile and popular layout. Position the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug to define the seating area while making the room feel open and balanced.

Coffee Table Only

Ideal for smaller spaces. The rug should extend beyond the coffee table while remaining centered within the seating arrangement.

Dining Room

Choose a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond all sides of the dining table. This allows chairs to remain on the rug, even when pulled out, creating a comfortable and polished dining experience.

Bedroom

King Bed

Place a large rug underneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending beyond both sides and the foot of the bed for a soft landing each morning.

Queen Bed

Center the rug beneath the bed with generous coverage on both sides. The rug should extend beyond the foot of the bed to frame the space beautifully.

Full or Twin Bed

Position the rug under the lower portion of the bed or place runners alongside each side for added comfort and style.

Entryway

Select a rug that complements your entry without blocking the door. Leave several inches of floor visible around the rug to create a welcoming first impression.

Hallway

Choose a runner that leaves 4–6 inches of floor exposed on each side. Center the runner to visually lengthen the hallway while protecting high-traffic areas.

Kitchen

Place a runner along galley kitchens or position accent rugs in front of the sink and prep areas. Choose sizes that allow cabinet doors and appliances to open freely.

Home Office

Position the rug so both your desk and chair remain on the rug while working. This creates a defined workspace and allows your chair to roll more smoothly.

Outdoor Spaces

Anchor your outdoor seating or dining area by placing the front legs—or all furniture legs—on the rug. Choose a size that creates a comfortable conversation or dining zone while adding warmth and style to your patio, porch, or deck.
